The NPD Group: The Window for Pay-TV Operators to Control the Video-On-Demand Movie Rental Market is Still Open, But For How Long?

According to The NPD Group, a leading market research company, the current video-on-demand (VOD) market for paid movie rentals is ruled by pay-TV services, with revenues that reached $ 1.3 billion last year. The emerging Internet video-on-demand (iVOD) movie market reached $ 204 million and is growing quickly, which may already be leading to consumers reducing their use of pay-TV VOD a-la-carte movie services. In fact, there were 4 million fewer pay-TV VOD users who paid additional fees to watch movies in August of 2011 compared to August 2010.

According to information from NPDs VideoWatch VOD tracking service, 15 percent of U.S. consumers ages 13 and older used pay-TV VOD movie services from a cable, satellite, or fiber-optic provider in the twelve months ending August 2011, which translates to 40 million users. By contrast the iVOD channel, which includes movie offerings from iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, and others, has already reached seven million users. One out of every six (16 percent) paid VOD movie-rental transactions were attributed to iVOD in 2011.

With consumers being exposed to more paid on-demand viewing options, pay-TV operators still have a window of opportunity to take advantage of their relationship with customers, said Russ Crupnick, senior vice president, industry analysis for The NPD Group. The home TV is by far the leading way consumers pay for movies via VOD and pay-TV companies currently control both the billing relationships and the remote controls associated with those TVs.

The challenge for pay-TV operators is that there is significant overlap between iVOD and pay-TV VOD movie usage, Crupnick said. “This overlap is expected to increase — possibly cutting deeply into pay-TV VOD movie revenues — as growth in consumers use of Apples iTunes, Vudu, and other services expands to new connected devices in the home, and as iVOD interfaces become easier to use.”

iVOD users reduced their time spent watching TV shows, news and sports via pay-TV companies by 12 percent between August 2010 and August 2011; so pay-TV operators now must not only defend their movie VOD revenues, but also counter an emerging threat to the basic programming served to consumers,” Crupnick said.

According to NPD users perceive watching iVOD movies to be a better value, than watching movies on pay-TV VOD. Users also have a more favorable perception of iVOD, when it comes to available movie-title selections.

iVOD distributors are effectively using CRM, free trials, and other promotions to gain trial usage of their services by new customers, Crupnick said. With this new competition eating away at revenues, pay-TV operators need to be equally aggressive with promotions, in order to instill a habit of movie buying among their subscribers.

Information in this press release is based on NPDs VideoWatch VOD tracking service, which reports on a-la-carte paid movie rentals only. This data does not include free or paid viewings of television shows or series; nor does it include Netflix Streaming movie subscriptions or free movies from pay-TV providers that are included in their subscriptions. All findings are based on information compiled from more than 22,000 members of NPDs online consumer panel. All data has been weighted and projected to reflect the U.S. population (age 13 and older).

Christian Credit Counselors Helps Church Members Save More than $1 Million Dollars in Interest Payments

More than 800 churches have enrolled in the Good Samaritan Program financial course since its official debut in April 2011. During that time, Christian Credit Counselors was able to help more than 100 church members take control of their finances and enroll in the Debt Management Plan, saving them each an average of $ 10,000 in interest payments and getting them out of debt years sooner.

In an interview aired on Good Samaritan Program TV on Tuesday, Samantha Rios, Good Samaritan Program Administrator, gave viewers several program updates and shared advice for running a successful course at one’s church.

Rios shared the fresh, new look of the program materials, with featured speaker Pastor Miles McPherson front and center. McPherson is the senior pastor of the Rock Church in San Diego, one of the largest and fastest growing churches in the United States. The facilitator access area on the Good Samaritan Program website also had a facelift to allow for better visibility and usability.

“That’s what we’re trying to do,” Rios said. “To make this as easy as possible to run and to participate.”

Although the program has only been available for 10 months, many church members are already using the practical teaching provided to get their financial lives on track.

Filmmaker Receives Death Threat After Release of Fictional Comedy Trailer for Movie “My Hometown”

His hometown residents should be kissing his ass, not threatening him, said Del Weston, CEO of the Action On Film International Festival in Los Angeles where the movie My Hometown placed second, worldwide, for Outstanding Cast Performance, and was also nominated for Best Produced Screenplay. Not only did Jomar Entertainment allow over 300 local residents, city workers, and businesses the chance to be in this movie, but it offers a shot to put Peabody on the tourists map. Revenue to the city could skyrocket. Look what The Perfect Storm did for nearby Gloucester.

In just 6 days on youtube, the views of the films trailer have climbed to almost 20,000 and continue to grow. And while most people find the trailer amusing, a few did not. Everyones entitled to their opinion, said Bash Naran, Head Producer. But none of us expected threats. Its pretty ridiculous.

At this point, weve simply noted where the threat came from. Im not going to comment on what we will do about it just yet because honestly, I just dont know, said Joel Greenberg. The threat was posted on the youtube page and it said: If this is what you think of Peabody, then stay the F out…. And dont ever come back… if you know whats good for you.

We couldnt believe what we were reading, said Naran. Were talking about a fictional film, but Joel and I dont believe that comment was geared towards our fictional characters.

I think there were a lot of misconceptions about what this film really is, and what its not, said Joel Greenberg, the films director. First of all, its NOT about the real Peabody, Massachusetts. It was just set there. And secondly, although Peabody is my real hometown, the title is not referring to me. Its referring to Richard Dickson and Reese Bieber, and all the fictional characters in the movie. It was their hometown. And if Peabody didnt approve and sign off on it, we would have shot the script elsewhere, using other locals instead. Bottom line is were filmmakers and were gonna make the movie wherever.

Before the city signed off, they asked for a synopsis, and thats what we gave them, said Bash Naran, Head Producer. No one ever read – or asked for – the whole script. We just paid the fees for the use of the school, did what we were told we needed to do, and we made an award winning film. Peabody should be proud to be part of that process – especially with the attention its getting in Hollywood.

Shooting a movie in the city I grew up in was the best filmmaking experience Ive ever had. Everyone in Peabody was just great to work with, and we had some incredible times together on set. Anyone who thinks that whats in this movie is what I really think of Peabody, and anyone who thinks this is the least bit true must be as dumb as our characters – plain and simple, said Greenberg.

If you enjoy raunchy comedies, My Hometown, starring Ryan Merriman, Mark Munford, Casey Margolis, and Pinky, will take you on a hilarious wild ride that you wont soon forget. Mixing real locals with professional Hollywood actors all throughout, My Hometown tells the story of three local high school buddies who team up to help Richard Dickson graduate by completing an assignment. Richards assignment – make a movie about his hometown and why its such a great place to live. Richards problem – he doesnt believe it is. While completing this assignment to graduate, he accidentally stumbles upon a sinister plot by a high school janitor to get revenge on the mayor of the city for ruining his reputation and unjustly firing him.

The filmmakers have since removed all the comments on youtube, and changed their settings so that anyone who comments now must be a contact of theirs on youtube.

The ten-piece Either/Orchestra performs twice in February with the New England premieres of The Collected Unconscious, a new suite composed by band founder Russ Gershon and based on the pentatonic modes of and triple rhythms of Ethiopian music. The language of the suite goes far beyond those parameters, recalling Ellington, Mingus, Tito Puente, Sun Ra and others in its broad scope. Jerry McTaggart, Founder of Christian Credit Counselors, Appears on Good Samaritan Program TV to Talk About Catherine’s Children’s Homes

Jerry McTaggart believes he is more blessed than the children he helps. As a man who dropped out of school after the tenth grade, he has not only excelled as a businessman, but has also thrived as a philanthropist who seems to be working even more in his retirement years.

In an interview shown Monday on Good Samaritan Program TV, McTaggart gave viewers some insight into his involvement with Catherine’s Children’s Home and how essential and rewarding his work with the organization really is.

Catherine’s Children’s Home was founded in 2005 to promote the health and well-being of special needs children, orphans and the most impoverished sections of the population. Catherine’s works to support the population of Mexico by reducing their vulnerability caused by inadequate healthcare services and the absence of suitable services and care – primarily through providing better access to healthcare services, promoting healthcare awareness and mobilizing communities to make sustainable changes.

McTaggart heads up the board of directors for Catherine’s and after retiring as CEO of Christian Credit Counselors in 2006, was able to devote his full attention to expanding the organization and helping as many special-needs kids as possible.

In the interview, he spoke about a boy he and Catherine’s was able to help who had spina bifida, a club foot and a brain tumor. After several procedures and hospitals, the boy beat the odds and would not be needing to learn to live as a quadriplegic.

“You’d never know he’d had all those problems today,” McTaggart said.

The children McTaggart has dedicated his retirement years to helping are many times abandoned, special-needs kids who have had a tough go at life so far. McTaggart lived in a children’s home for five years in the United States during his childhood, so he understands a portion of what these kids are going through.

Intrepid blogger Lane Weinberg is at it again, announcing new milestones this week in his burgeoning blogging career.

These subject matters are very near and dear to me, Lane Weinberg said. RIT Experts Discuss Kodak Bankruptcy Filing

The vibrancy of the bright yellow box of film has faded. The iconic Eastman Kodak Co., once a giant in the film industry, has filed for protection from its creditors under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Founded in 1881 under the helm of inventor George Eastman, the company was a trailblazer in photographic equipment and cameras until the shift to digital technology.

Its no longer a Kodak moment, say experts from Rochester Institute of Technologywho discuss the decline, struggles and opportunities for the global industrial and commercial technology giant based in Rochester, N.Y.

The following are insights from experts at RITs E. Philip Saunders College of Business and RITs College of Imaging Arts and Sciences:

The business perspective

Daniel Tessoni, assistant professor of accounting in RITs E. Philip Saunders College of Business:

???? The Eastman Kodak Chapter 11 filing was not unexpected. The filing indicates that the companys ability to generate cash from its continuing operations is simply not sufficient to meet its creditors obligations.
???? The good news is that this will buy time for management to deliver on a business plan that, if successfully executed, would allow it to emerge from Chapter 11 a more financially sound organization. The fact that the company has secured a $ 950 million line of credit and is seeking a stalking horse bidder for the patent portfolio that it is attempting to monetize can provide time for the company to deliver on a more sustainable business model.
???? Ultimately that remains the big question. Is there a viable business model underlying Eastman Kodaks financial troubles? Companies have emerged successfully from Chapter 11 filings because they have been able to deliver on a financially viable business plan.
???? While Eastman Kodaks management continues to express confidence in its ability to be a successful company, it has not provided any observable or tangible evidence to support that position. Until Kodaks financial performance improves, its employees, retirees, creditors and other stakeholders remain at high risk.

John Ward, former Kodak employee and lecturer in RITs E. Philip Saunders College of Business:

???? Kodak has many strong assets to carry forward post bankruptcy. While the brand value has dropped over the years, it is still very strong on a global basis. They have an excellent portfolio of intellectual property in the imaging space that can be the core of new solutions. They have excellent employees around the world. They have strong product lines in the commercial printing areas. These assets are significant and will likely provide the basis for successful go-forward model post bankruptcy.
???? You push the button we do the rest was the tagline for one of the most unique business models in history. The model provided people with a highly valued way to capture and preserve their cherished memories for over 100 years. There is still an opportunity for some company or companies to provide a similar, simple solution for the entire systemfrom capture to storage and access in the digital space. The opportunity is large.
???? The photography market that Kodak dominated was a uniquely profitable model. Every picture taken used a piece of high profit margin film, and one or sometimes two, pieces of high profit margin paper. Add to this profit on the sale of film, frames and processing, there was tremendous value created. With digital there is profit made on the sale of the camera but after that there is little else. The pie shrank rapidly, and as Kodak had the biggest portion of the pie they felt the most pain.
???? One of the things that probably hurt Kodaks transition plans the most is the lack of consumer printing. Kodak was well positioned to grab a share of this printing market with their photographic, thermal and ink jet solutions.
???? In the late 1990s and early 2000, it was clear that digital photography would replace traditional photography. What was uncertain was the rate at which the change would take place. In the short-termed-focused world of the U.S. business it would have been very difficult for a CEO at Kodak to bias towards a more rapid decline of their film and paper business. So the incentive was to always bias toward a slower substitution rate and this led to the slow bleed that the company has undergone for the past decade.
???? Even if Kodak had made a faster move to focus on digital imaging, the net impact on Rochester, N.Y., would have been very similar. The reality is that digital cameras and other imaging devices would likely be manufactured offshore. Kodak would need to be a much leaner company to compete in the lower profit margin world of digital, regardless.

The historical and photographic perspective

Therese Mulligan, professor and administrative chair of RITs School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences:

???? Eastman Kodaks bankruptcy filing marks the end of one era in the larger-than-life legacy of a photographic industry giant, and the beginning of another. For much of its history, the company has been a sustaining force in Rochester, especially in its support of educational institutions, such as George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film, and Rochester Institute of Technology and its School of Photographic Arts and Sciences.
???? In an intertwining history of ambition and innovation, legions of Kodak personnel received their educational degrees at RIT, pursuing such diverse areas as professional photographic illustration, photographic sciences and technology, and engineering, to name but a few.
???? At RIT today, there is not one student who is not touched by the legacy built by the companywhether walking through the quad or hall that bears George Eastmans name, being taught by a professor who worked at Kodak, attending an annual photo educational panel supported each fall by the company, working in one of the company-named photo or digital labs, or using the products the company donates to current students for their educational experience.

Andrew Davidhazy, professor of imaging and photographic technology at RITs School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences:

???? Lets not forget that Kodak is not alone in this quandary. Film giants like Agfa and Ilford and these days also Fuji are feeling the effects of the digital revolution.
???? Kodak led the industry in helping set photographic standards. Their research and development division was, in my opinion, second to none in terms of advancing the industry and setting the highest standards that others benefited from.
???? Kodak helped RIT in general, and the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in particular, with significant support through the yearsmore so than any other corporation. It contributed, to some extent, to establishing a symbiotic relationship. Many RIT grads went on to contribute to Kodak particularly in the areas of chemical engineering, mathematics, electrical engineering, business, etc.
???? While some assume that Kodak was in the business of camera making, they were not. They are a chemistry based, film production corporation. They essentially provided the expendable material (film) to the masses much like Mobil, Chevron and others provide gasoline. Once the demand for gasoline dwindles, what will these companies engage in to stay afloat? Build cars? Sell electricity? I dont think so. One item that others also consider a poor move was to sell off Eastman Chemical.

???? Im somewhat surprised that it has come to this because the sale of motion picture film stock and processing chemicals, while declining slowly, is still very profitable.

What began as a difficult year in the consumer electronics business ended the same way, according to leading market research company The NPD Groups Weekly Tracking Service*. Total consumer technology sales (excluding cell phones, tablets, e-readers, and video games) fell 5.9 percent to around $ 9.5 billion for the 5 weeks ending December 24**, a slight improvement over the 6.2 percent decline in 2010.

Despite the gloom over the PC and TV marketplaces, sales for those two core categories dipped just 4 percent in dollars over 2010, and unit volumes were essentially flat on a year-over-year basis.

2010 was the first year in quite awhile where the real drags on the core CE marketplace were not TVs and PCs, said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. Revenue for those two segments outperformed while the rest of the market dropped by more than 7 percent. The accelerated rate of decline in older technology categories such as DVD, GPS and MP3 players put a ceiling on how well the industry could perform during the holiday.

Desktop PCs posted a 2 percent unit volume increase but it wasnt enough to offset the 5 percent decline in notebook sales which brought overall PC sales down 4 percent. ASPs jumped $ 9 year-over-year to $ 575 continuing last years trend of increasing holiday pricing levels. Windows-based all-in-one (AIO) PCs increased 135 percent and accounted for almost 20 percent of all Windows desktop unit sales volume.

Big screen TVs gave a big boost to the flat-panel TV market, thanks to unit sales of TVs with screen sizes 50 inches and higher increasing by 32 percent. Approximately one-in-six flat-panel TVs sold were above 50 inches and the share of flat-panel TVs greater than 60 inches more than tripled. Meanwhile 32 inch TVs, the markets largest single size segment, saw revenue drop almost 9 percent and average prices fall below $ 300, to $ 277. 3D TVs, the industrys most maligned segment, saw unit volumes soar by more than 100 percent and TVs with 3D capability accounted for more than one in every five dollars spent on TVs during the holiday.

Under the TV devices was another bright spot for the industry. Sales revenue for home theater systems increased 10 percent, receiver revenue increased by 3.5 percent and stand-alone streaming devices saw a 65 percent increase in revenue while stand-alone speaker systems for portable devices saw revenue increase almost 10 percent.

It was truly a mixed bag this year, said Baker. Many newer technologies posted strong gains, although most of those products, such as streaming devices, still generate volumes too small to impact the overall market trend. These newer technologies are likely to be the ones to watch in 2012 as the industry continues to search for high growth opportunities to replace aging product segments.

Total Artificial Heart Recipient Heads Home for the Holidays with New Donor Heart & Kidney

Last month, with the holiday season just around the corner, Jennifer Kliesing was preparing to give her husband the ultimate gift: one of her kidneys. In June, her husband Jeremiah had suffered two heart attacks and was subsequently implanted with the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart at Texas Heart Institute (THI) at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital in Houston. When Jeremiahs kidney function had not returned after several months, Jennifer had been tested and approved as a match for her husband. However, on Nov. 11, a matching donor heart and kidney became available, and Jeremiah received the dual transplant he had been waiting for.

I know every wife says she loves her husband, but Jeremiah and I have always had something extra, Jennifer wrote in an email to SynCardia after her husband received the Total Artificial Heart. I was terrified several times that I would go through the rest of my life without him, and SynCardia let him live hes thrilled to be here.

Jeremiah suffered his first heart attack at home on June 5, and was admitted to the local VA hospital. Doctors told him the heart attack had caused so much damage that doing a bypass was no longer an option. Five days later, he suffered a second heart attack in the hospital and wouldve died if not for 20 people spending a total of five hours doing CPR to keep him alive. Clinging to life, Jeremiah was transferred to THI, where he was sedated, intubated, on biventricular support and undergoing dialysis. To save Jeremiahs life, on July 24, THI doctors implanted SynCardias Total Artificial Heart to bridge him to a heart transplant.

We are thankful for each other, said Jennifer. We have each enriched the others life by being a constant source of support during rough times and a constant source of joy all the time. We are thankful for God who is The Third in our marriage, and wraps his arms around us both. We are profoundly thankful for friends and family and medical staff worldwide for ushering in all manner of technology and wisdom that saved Jeremiah’s life, and supported us both with attention and concern, food and money, and thousands of prayers.

Jeremiah was discharged from the hospital with his new donor heart and kidney on Nov. 29, 2011. For the holidays, the couple is planning on hosting a small gathering with close family at their home on Christmas Eve, and a quiet movie marathon on Christmas Day. Jennifer says their New Years resolutions for 2012 are to be advocates for organ donation, to seek a meeting with their donor family and to inspire as many folks as possible to love each other and be peaceful towards one another.

Winter Wonderland Kicks off the Holiday Season in Style

As part of the festivities, over 1000 children from charitable organizations were hosted at Winter Wonderland, including the Vista Del Mar Orphanage, Youth Justice Coalition, Lula Washington Dance Theater, Troys Project for Humanity, the Covenant House California, Ettie Lee Orphanage and Casa Esperanza Group Home. Santa Claus was there to greet the children.

NYChessKids will be holding their December Camp this year during winter recess from December 26-30 at P.S. 116: The Mary Lindley Murray School, located at 210 E. 33rd St. At previous camps, students from all over the city have come to take part in the great fun and learning experiences that chess offers. The goal of the camp is to foster an environment of learning and fun, so that students are happy before and after the day.

The schedule for each day of the chess camp will remain consistent, however, every lesson will vary day-to-day. Beginning with a warm-up session and a tournament-style session, every activity afterwards will change each day.

Students will take part in chess-related tasks like puzzle solving, lessons on demonstration boards and analysis sessions.

At the NYChessKids camp, students will be paired off with kids of similar age and playing skill. Special study groups are offered for very young children and advanced students. The camp also offers instruction to the newest, youngest beginners (as young as 3 1/2 to 4 years old).

It is important that each student has a great time and really utilizes their abilities.

Full day students will focus on chess for the majority of the morning starting at 9 a.m. and will spend the afternoon on outdoor exercises. A tournament-style game will be conducted at the end of the camp day, which will end at 5 p.m. Students participating in half-day camp will be working on chess for the majority of the time from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Drinks, snack and lunch will be provided for students, but kids can bring their own snacks too!

During breaks, students can watch movies, play video games, play more chess/bughouse, or do physical exercises in the gym. For very motivated students, the breaks are a tremendous opportunity for gaining specialized instruction from a teacher.

Many years later, as a civilian, Cooper writes this book with a sense of urgency to solve the mysteries surrounding Lambs life and death. Why did Lamb engage in such utterly reckless behavior during the battle? His medal cited bravery above and beyond the call of duty. Why was a Japanese officer buried in Lambs grave?

Cooper goes to Tokyo to clear up these mysteries. While there, he falls in love with a Japanese widow and quickly finds his lifeand his brides–caught up in a campaign, passionately fought and fiercely resisted, to make Japan apologize for its war crimes.

In solving the mysteries, Cooper takes us to:

The case of the wrong body, Cooper learns, was a coverup by the government. He also learns that the Japanese officer, his brides father, was the monster who commanded The Rape of Nanking and other horrors.

Cooper solves the other mystery. Private Lamb died in order to prove to his father that he had been misjudgedthat he wasnt a coward, that he was as much a credit to his familys name as his father, General Lamb, had been.

Cooper decides that Lambs remains are best left in the old battlefield, where he died. The remains of the Japanese officer are exhumed from Lambs grave. Like evil Ahad of the Bible, his bones are chewed upon by dogs, then tossed into a furnace.

Leon Cooper was a 90 Day Wonder, a WWII volunteer who received his commission in 90 days. Three of his four years Navy service were in the Pacific. New Study Shows Electronic Cigarettes May Help Unmotivated Smokers Cut Down or Quit, Says Square

Square has long believed that their disposable electronic cigarettes canand dohelp people cut down or even stop smoking cigarettes. That idea was recently supported in an Italian study posted on the BMC Public Health website, according to a new article by the American Counsel of Science and Health (ACSH).

The ACSH article states that electronic cigarettes stood up favorably in this first clinical trial. Results indicate that the electronic devices may not only be more effective than traditional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) at helping people who want to quit smoking; e-cigarettes may also help cigarette smokers reduce their smokingeven those who express no interest in kicking the habit.

The small clinical trial was conducted on 40 healthy adults, who smoked regularly and had no expressed intention of quitting. Intervention was limited to providing each smoker in the study group electronic cigarettes and conducting a baseline assessment and four follow-up clinic visits. The smokers were simply told to use the e-cigarettes as they pleasedbut were not instructed to quit smoking regular cigarettes.

Over the next six months, 22.5 percent of the participants reported that they had completely quit smoking. Another 32.5 percent reported that they had cut down their cigarette consumption by at least half. In sum, over half of the smokers were able to quit or significantly cut down their cigarette use. This outcome is especially impressive, according to the article, considering that the six-month quit rate for approved cessation aids is well below 20 percentand those results are derived from smokers who want to quit and are followed closely in a clinical setting.

This trial simulated a real-life experience, where no motivation or support was offered to subjects to quit smoking, said ACSH advisor Dr. Mike Siegel, professor at Boston University’s School of Public Health. This could well be groundbreaking. Siegel indicated that he is excited to see the results of more extensive clinical trials, particularly involving subjects who are motivated to quit, stating, I am confident that the success rate will be significantly higher.

Moving from regular cigarettes to e-cigs can be a good health move. Jean-Fran?ois Etter, a researcher at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine in Geneva was recently quoted as stating that even though fake cigarettes still contain nicotine, smokers who use them are not exposed to some 4,000 toxic substances present in tobacco cigarettes.
